Top 5 Health Reasons to Walk

You know that you should exercise more, but who has the time, energy or money to go to the gym every day? But you don't have to spend hours sweating and grunting as you run 10 miles or lift impossibly heavy weights. Doctors have found that simply walking has significant health benefits for everyone, and particularly for women. We can all fit a little bit more walking into our daily lives. (Click here for tips.) Especially when you consider the following reasons why it's so good for you:

1 - Loose Weight and Stay Slim

If you are physically inactive, then taking a daily 30 minute walk can prevent future waight gain. And many people have lost a significant amount of weight by adding a daily walk and watching their diet.

If you have not been exercising regularly, it may be best to start slowly with 5 or 10 minutes and gradually work your way up to 30. And best of all, the 30 minutes does not necessarily have to be continuous. Doctors say that several shorter walks throughout the day add up to great health benefits, too.

2 - Protect Your Heart

A brisk 30 minute daily walk reduces the chance of developing "metabolic syndrome," also known as "insulin resistance syndrome." People with metabolic syndrome have a much higher risk of coronary heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. The number of U.S. women with metabolic syndrome is about 24 million! (Metabolic syndrome is characterized by: excessive abdominal fat, high LDL cholesterol (the bad kind) and triglycerides, high blood pressure, glucose intolerance and other factors.)

3 - Save Your Bones

Walking is not just good for your heart, it also strengthens your bones and muscles. Walking 30 minutes 3 times each week helps reduce the risk of developing osteoporosis.

4 - Reduce Cancer Risk

You can reduce your risk of getting breast cancer by walking. And it doesn't have to be hours every day - even a few hours each week helps significantly. Exercise may also reduce your risk of developing several other types of cancer.

5 - Boost Your Brain

Walking helps reduce stress, anxiety and depression. It can also help you sleep better at night. (Just make sure to finish your exercise at least 2 hours before bedtime.) And finally, some studies have found that walkers have lower rates of Alzheimer's disease and improved mental clarity.

And Don't Forget To Eat A Healthy Diet

Exercise is just one half of the health and fitness equation. Eating a healthy diet is the other. Watch not only what you eat, and but how much. Experts say that portion sizes have grown so large in recent years, most of us don't have any idea how much we should be eating. Learn more about easy serving size portion control.
